Introductions

Hi all,
I am Soraya. I am 17 years old and have recently embarked on the 801010 high carb, low fat (mostly) raw vegan lifestyle. I realize this blog will probably be read by no one, but I am keen to share my journey, feelings and emotions regardless, and perhaps it will someday help someone going through the same thing.

Two years ago, I had a sort of eating-disorder. I got up to 64 kg, and constantly down to about 56, and then back up some etc etc. I was living in a toxic environment (Dubai), where the lifestyle is one of extravagance and partying. I had forgotten about simplicity, and internal well-being. I had severe depression (it was very bad, and a huge problem for my family). Anyway, I got myself out of there and moved to New Zealand to live with my dad. My whole world changed. I began focusing on health! No more would I do fad diets (I had been a master of the master cleanse, and water fasts - going sometimes 5 days with no food). My metabolism needed serious fixing! I began to focus on filling my body with good, nutrient dense food (although I was still consuming 900-1000 calories per day on average - thank you very much, media, for propagating the terrible myth that calories in = calories out, and that lesser means more weight loss). This was far too low, and although I got to a healthy weight, and with improved athletic performance (running, football/soccer and field hockey), I was tired - though this may be because I was also participating in Jazz band, Choir, Concert Band, Writing Club, Inter-school Debating and Glee-Club. I then began to do serious weight training. I loved it, but simply wasn't making the gains that I wanted. That is when I found IIFYM. I loved IIFYM, and I made seeeerious muscle-development in the 8 months that I practiced it, but it gave me an unhealthy sort of perspective, where I believed that 100cals of fruit was the same in my body as 100 cals of biscuits. It also made me fear foods too high in carbohydrates, such as bananas, and I basically went the whole year without eating them (they are now in my top 3 favourite fruits, and I eat 6-10 per day).
More over, whilst I made serious muscle-gains (yay), I also just got a bit softer all over. That is when I discovered Freelee, 801010, RIce and Raw, Teri Leventhal, and many others, who just inspired me! I was so envious of their abundant lifestyle, their crazzzzzy energy levels and their radiance. I had to try it! I spent the next week transitioning, whilst spending endless hours online watching videos of people on this lifestyle.

This is me about 2 weeks in, whilst in Australia, and around 1-1.5 kilos up.

So here it is:
Starting weight: 64.8 kg
That was about two weeks ago. I was veeeeery scared of the initial weight gain. I contemplated restricting calories, but decided that it was just not worth it. Since then, I have had a slice of cake here and there, high fat meals every second dinner (staying with my Tongan cousins meant lots of coconut milk), a couple of nights with pizza. See, I was staying with my cousins, which meant that I didn't really get to choose what we would eat for dinner, and I could have made a big fuss over insisting I eat what I want, but in all honesty, I didn't really want to do that. I just wanted to enjoy this time with my family. The great thing, though, was that there was neeever a shortage of fruit! Tongans LOVE mangoes, pineapples, oranges, nectarines, coconuts and bananas, so they didn't see my "excessive" consumption of fruit as unusual at all - they eat the same quantities anyway!

I gained perhaps one kilo in that time. I usually exercise 2 hours per day - weight training and interval training - but during those two weeks I was only making it to the gym 3-4 times per week, and for only an hour each time. I then got to Dubai (ordered the fruit platter on the 14 hour flight, Emirates Airline, and was pleasantly surprised with my blueberries, dragon fruit, pineapple, apple and melon). It was much easier to stay on track when living with my mum! The next day, we went to a fruit store (a cheap, shabby and low-maintenance - but delicious - local shack-type one) and for $84 NZD, we got all of this! I think by the time I got to Dubai, I had gained another kilo. All up, that is like 5 lbs.

3 days later, and I have lost a kg! 64 kg all-up now!
Yayyyyyy!

Anyway, Im off to make some banana nice-cream and datorade. If you would like to see my tumultuous roller-coaster of a journey that has been the last 3 weeks, you can follow my instagram - soraya_fit

Happy Carbing!
